 "Starting a FUELN generator" 2009-01-03
By Carol J. Salmon (Sweet Home OR)
Purchased this generator and changed oil to synthetic for easier cold weather starting. Fuel it and ran electric starter for a long time before it started. Haven't been able to start it since. No manual choke. Recharged battery and still couldn't start it. Bought it because of electric starter. Recharging again. If I have another power failure and

am unable to start it I will be more than unhappy with my choice.

Power electronics, small appliances.
Power electronics, small appliances.
When storm emergencies hit, it's good to have electricity, light, and a radio. It's even better to have all those things together in one place and easy to find when the lights go out. Black & Decker gives you all the emergency essentials in one handy StormStation.

How it Works
This portable unit is equipped with a weather radio, power inverter, and detachable flashlight. When the power goes out, the StormStation's "Find Me" light automatically turns on. Use its 25-watt inverter to power small, essential appliances, like a clock or a cordless phone to keep lines of communication open. Or charge your cell phone via the 12-volt recharging port.

Tune in news on the unit's radio.
Tune in news on the unit's radio.
Listen to the built-in radio to stay informed about civil and natural emergencies--it tunes in AM, FM, TV1, TV2, and weather frequencies. Or remove the flashlight to help see in your darkened home.

All of these features run off the StormStation's 12-volt rechargeable battery. To be prepared for a power outage, keep the StormStation plugged in to an electrical outlet for a full charge.

The StormStation is covered by a two-year warranty from Black & Decker.

 "Best gift ever" 2009-10-04
By Georgia W. Roessler (TX)
I gave the storm station as a birthday gift to a relative in Arkansas. The family was so impressed by the gift they called me and said it came just in time to alert them of an oncoming storm. Every outlet worked perfectly, the light it gave them when the power went out was incredible. They felt so much better and safer having the StormStation during their frequent power outages. Fantastic buy for the money

Given that this is meant to provide back up service in case of an emergency you'd expect it to be reliable.

It failed after 1 year of service. In other words after a year of sitting around do nothing. It now does even less

"Great Idea- doesn't work just 1 year later" 2009-06-30
By Dan Brandt (Salt Lake City Utah)
We recieved this as a Christmas gift from my preparedness minded mother-in-law. Loved the idea and immediately read the manual and employed. Every 3 months I checked it to make sure it was working correctly. After just a year of charging/storing as manufacturer recommends, the station no longer holds any charge.

"Great idea, but needs improvements" 2009-01-05
By S. M. Akin (East Texas)
This is a great product and has proven useful through two hurricanes (Rita and Ike) that made it into east Texas, as well as several power outages. The different radio bands provide all the sources of information you might need, and I've been impressed with the quality of the speaker used for the radio function. The inverter and 12volt power point plug work well, keeping our cell phones charged during outages. The areas where Black and Decker could improve this product is to provide LED lighting for both the recharging flashlight and the small attached room light (they currently use incandescent bulbs). This would make the product use even less electricity while providing an even more reliable light source. I've had to replace the bulb on the rechargeable flashlight several times and the light it produces is quite dim, although serviceable when needed.

 "unreliable" 2008-10-19
By Florida (Palmetto, Fl. USA)
I received this as a gift 3 years ago and pull it out each year and recharge it. This year the main battery is dead and won't recharge even though the green light indicates it's fully charged. The flashlight works and does recharge. A replacement battery is over $30.00 with shipping. The unit does work when it's plugged in(not its intended purpose), but the radio only works on am/fm with just static on the other channels. I wouldn't buy one of these.

Started once and then never again. We are an electrical construction company and should have known better than to invest time and money in this disappointment of a unit. With a generic troubleshooting manual and no spare parts available, it is not worth the effort to repair. Buy a Honda and you will never go wrong.

"Great little generator for it's price and specs" 2009-09-15
By M. E. Munoz (Virginia Beach, VA)
I bought this little generator about a year ago in preparation for any power outages in our area due to the occasional hurricane or tropical storm that occasionally blows through. We have been relatively spared but a mild rain storm knocked out the power to my neighbor and me. We used it for about 1 hour but it worked well and I'm sure it would have done well with a much longer outage. I tested the generator when it first arrived as many of the other reviewers suggested. I even pulled the spark plug and checked it out for shipping damage. No problems. I Ran a tank of gas through it and put a small load ~100w and let it run until it ran out of gas then I stored it.

This past outage, I was able to run 3 9w CFL bulbs spread throughout the house (using extension cords), a curling iron (85w), and a hair dryer on medium (600w) without a problem. As others have mentioned, when large loads are placed on it (such as the hair drier) it will load up the engine and the engine will compensate. In the interim though the voltage dips so you have to be careful that whatever you are running isn't too sensitive to power fluctuations. You also have to keep in mind that the generator is not a true sine wave output (it's modified sine wave) so some electronics may not do well with it.

For the price (I got it for $109 here on Amazon) it's quite excellent. The price seems to have jumped up considerably though since my initial purchase (Summer 2008)

------------

Update November 2009

Well, we just had a Nor'easter here in Virginia Beach, VA and our power was out for about 24h. The generator worked well and powered my devices (four 13w CFL's, 2 cell phone chargers, an LED spotlight charger, the curling iron and the hair dryer) simultaneously without a problem. It was loaded ~80% load for only about 15 minutes and 10% load for about 3 hours. No problems. A word of warning though. I put a voltmeter in the plug and got a reading of 103v fully loaded, 115v unloaded. This may be unacceptable for certain devices. Luckily, all of my power bricks are rated for worldwide use (100-240v) so they didn't have a problem with the low voltage. Also, the lights would flicker a bit so the power is not clean.

I would still maintain the 4-star rating as this genset is a very economical way to power your basic needs (lights, battery chargers [cell phone, battery powered tools, NiMH batteries, car batteries, or solar battery banks) for very long periods without wasting large amounts of fuel as a large wattage generator would.

"Very Poor Product. Does not perform as advertised." 2009-09-23
By M. Trudeau (Philadelphia, PA USA)
I purchased the Black and Decker CPI100B to power my Pioneer Inno portable XM radio and portable Saitek speaker. When connecting both units to a fully charged CPI100B, the unit would cut out after 5 minutes. I then tried to power the portable speaker by itself with a 12W maximum output on the CPI100B and then unit would cut out after 20 minutes. The portable speaker typically lasts 2+ hours on 4AAA batteries so I was hoping for at least double the performance. The only use of this product would be to charge a cell phone or other very small electronic device. I doubt it could even power I cannot recommend this product and would advice people to not purchase it and perform research on a similar product.

With the advertized 4AH battery, I was hoping to power some of my low-mid power (15W to 40W) lights and tools. The B&D worked fine for the first few recharges (I was able to get 1-2 hours runtime) but then dropped to 20-30 minutes. I have the same problem with their 20W power supply. I am giving up on NiMH-based batteries and planning to try the Xantrex/Duracell with the Li-ion batteries.

"Very Nice Generator - good compromise" 2009-11-24
By Amazonian (Around the World)
Got this about a month ago for tailgates. Haven't put much time on it yet, but here are some intitial comments:

1) Mine did not come with a DC plug / adapter. Called ETQ and they said that the newer ones do not have that feature.

2) There is an error in the manual. It says to use 10w30 oil. That is NOT CORRECT. Use only 2 cycle oil. The manual is wrong.

I tested the sound level using my radio shack sound level meter and found that at 23 feet it produced around 59 dbA and at 9 feet it produced about 67 dbA. I would characterize the sound as louder than the Honda EU2000 / EU1000, but overall not too objectionable as it's kind of a low pitch sound. It's definitely why the unit is less expensive than the Honda EU, which I could not justify price-wise.

 "carburetor problems" 2009-11-10
By Alan L. Peterson
Got the generator for lightning my power panel which I needed to replace. Worked fine the first 6 hours. Next day, fuel was running out of the carburetor. No expertise here, but took off float bowl, air cleaner cover, sprayed choke/carburetor cleaner, and applied air pressure . Still, same problem. Used flashlight and batteries to finish my panel wiring. Next day took bowl apart and noticed gas inside the plastic float. Drained float and put a thin coat of Krazy Glue around the seam where it seemed to be leaking. With a smile, put it back together, but same problem of leaking gas around the carburetor. Next day, took bowl apart, experimented with the float tang that regulates gas flow at the pin valve, and finally success. Local small engine repair folks told me they knew of nothing that would work other than a replacement float. Had used similar glue on an outboard motor lower gear housing and still working fine after several years.

"My bargain Generator - like it, but needed some work ..." 2009-08-06
By David Hollfelder (Austin, TX)
Received my $118 (incl shipping) bargain "Chinese" generator from Amazon, NIB. Found it had been dropped, the foot had sunk (smashed) thru the styrofoam packing. The front panel including the air cleaner area was cracked with a piece broken off. Started and tested OK - actually runs very well. Called Amazon, "she" asked me "if I send the parts at no charge, can you fixit yourself?" I said yes.

BTW, Purchased the generator to power LiPoly battery chargers - charge RC airplane batteries at the flying field - many, of not most flying fields do not have electricity.

1) after one "run", the fitting attached to the fuel tank (above the petcock) started leaking. The connection was not tight enough. This is a straight ttread (not pipe thread) with a rubber "compression" bushing. After removal, I wound teflon tape around the threads, and under the place where the rubber compression grommet goes, so that when fitting was screwed into the gas tank, the threads were very tight fitting (because of the teflon tape) when hand tightened. When all was aligned, tightened with wrench to apprx 8 or 10 ft-lb.

2) Replacement panel was not exactly the same - had to fabricate new mounting for the capacitor, and power plug cover, and several other tweaks to get all to fit.

Disturbing Discovery; the wiring was not packed/secured properly - wiring was in contact with several vibrating parts, causing the wiring insulation to begin wear away (chafe) - this would eventually cause a "ground out" (cause a short to ground).

Once the front panel was repaired, and in place --- read on

** repairmans "pro" tip **. Remove the gas tank so you have access from the top. Cover the power wires with large shrink tubing (so it fits over the power wire(s) connectors) and tie wrap (somewhat loosely) - be sure that no wires touch the engine/generator or fuel tank (protect insulation from chafing), Then put gas tank on last. Inspect wiring using flashlight to double check that no wiring is touching anything where vibration would wear away the wire insulation.

Finally, I'm still pleased with the generator considering the price. I just had to finish the "quality".
